Timeline
Published my first instagram post on February 9, 2025, then shortly after created a plant grow-out tank in preparation of future classes and tank installations in clinics.
Taught my first ecology outreach class on May 23, 2025 that included students aquascaping their own jars, in which they put snails.
Installed my first aquarium in a private clinic in Los Gatos, California belonging to Dr. Bradford Perkins on August 8, 2025. The tank is the centerpiece of the waiting room/looby.
Why 'Ivan the Angelfish'?
Ivan the Angelfish isn't just a name, it's a tribute to my grandfather, Ivan Sitalov, and his resilient journey of healing through two wars and PTSD. My name is Evan Johnson, and this project began from witnessing how caring for angelfish helped my grandfather find peace after the hardships of war. From aquascaping, we not only discovered beauty, but also a path to solace and community.
Non-Profit Agency
I bring the wonders of aquascaping and the local ecology of the Santa Clara Valley and beyond to my local community which includes children, individuals with disabilities, seniors, veterans, and more. I teach accessible aquascaping classes and install calming aquariums in clinics, VA hospitals, and centers to promote learning and reduce stress.
